Modern Art Books

For many decades, the predominant view of modern art consisted of retracing the rise of various avant-gardes, at first European and then North-American, against the prevalent academic traditions. Nowadays we have a different view of art history, less linear and deterministic, in order to allow for geographical, vernacular and culturally diverse strands. These are some of my recommendations.
